Sunnybank Rugby Union Club, established in 1969 in Brisbane’s southern suburbs, has been a cornerstone of community sport for over five decades. Founded as a Junior Rugby Union club, the history of the Sunnybank Dragons was built on a foundation of inclusivity, ensuring every child, regardless of ability, had the opportunity to play. This principle remains at the heart of the club’s mission today.
Our club provides quality coaching, seamless administration, and engaging social programs and a high level of communication for its members. The club’s grounds are more than just playing fields—they are a hub for developing talent and fostering a strong sense of community.
Rooted in the vision of its founders, Sunnybank upholds values of leadership, hard work, respect, accountability, and integrity. These principles are embraced by generations of players, coaches, and supporters, creating a vibrant and inclusive culture. The club celebrates its diversity, with members from all walks of life united by their shared love for rugby.
From modest beginnings with two junior teams, Sunnybank has evolved into a powerhouse in Queensland rugby. Today, it proudly fields 40 teams within Brisbane rugby union competitions across men’s, women’s, juniors, and girls’ rugby in Brisbane competitions. This growth is a testament to the dedication of its supporters, members, and volunteers, whose passion and resilience continue to shape the club’s enduring rugby legacy.

OUR HISTORY
Since its founding in 1969 by John Biggs and his family, Sunnybank Rugby Union has grown from a juniors-only club into a respected community institution built on legacy, growth, and achievement. Starting with its first Under 19s team in 1975, the club expanded its offerings, fielding its first Senior team in 1979. In 1989, the club achieved First Grade promotion, and by 1993, it marked its first First Grade Grand Final appearance. This journey highlights Sunnybank’s commitment to developing talent and fostering a strong rugby community whilst staying true to our origins as one of the largest junior clubs in Brisbane.
